’Twas the Night Before Science Camp

'Twas the night before Science Camp, and all through the town,
Not a backpack was zipped up, not even a gown.
The duffels were sprawled in a heap on the floor,
With socks and old sweatshirts and boots by the door.
The students were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of bunk beds danced in their heads.
With dreams of night hikes through shadows and trees,
And banana slugs sliming along with great ease.
The flashlights were packed with spare batteries tight,
In hopes they'd shine bright in the dark woods at night.
Camp names were chosen—so silly and proud—
Like “Snappy the Squirrel” or “Bubbles the Loud.”
They’d heard about showers—just four minutes fast,
So quick, you might miss it! Don’t blink or you’ll pass.
And changing clothes secretly inside a tight bag,
While trying to balance, not trip, slip, or snag.
The campfires were waiting with soft glowing light,
For stories and songs in the cool, peaceful night.
You’ll sit with your friends, the stars shining above,
Wrapped up in warm laughter and campfire love.
The counselors waited with jokes up their sleeves,
While naturalists taught about nests under leaves.
The camp leaders smiled, full of knowledge and care,
Excited to welcome each camper who's there.
New friendships to form, and fears to be faced,
Like trying new foods that surprisingly taste—
Kinda awesome! From pancakes to stews,
You’ll eat it all up—no time to refuse!
Outdoors you'll be living, exploring, and free,
Climbing up ridges and hugging a tree.
You’ll learn about stars, the insects, the land,
With dirt in your nails and mud on your hand.
Adventure is calling, it’s practically here—
The best week of school, the highlight of year!
So pack up your courage, your boots, and your heart,
And get ready, dear camper—tomorrow you start!

Important Spring Events:
The Scotts Valley Police Department D.A.R.E. program's primary mission is to provide children with the information and skills they need to live drug and violence-free lives. Through D.A.R.E. we establish positive relationships between students and law enforcement, teachers, parents, and other community leaders.
D.A.R.E.'s innovative and highly effective curriculum was developed by Los Angeles Unified School District health education specialists. Our D.A.R.E. officers receive 80 hours of special training to be equipped with all the tools they need to teach a course in drug resistance and violence avoidance techniques.
D.A.R.E. lessons focus on providing accurate information about alcohol and drugs, teaching students decision-making skills, and showing them how to resist peer pressure. Our D.A.R.E. officers give students ideas for alternatives to drug use and violence.
Originally designed for elementary school students, D.A.R.E. has been expanded to reach middle and high school students as well. D.A.R.E. officers from Scotts Valley Police Department currently teach at Baymonte Christian School, Vine Hill School, Brook Knoll School, Scotts Valley Middle School, and Scotts Valley High School.
Our curriculum is open for review to any member of the community. For more information please contact the Scotts Valley Police Department Juvenile Division at (831) 440-5656, or visit the D.A.R.E. website.
