CALIFORNIA HEALTHY KIDS RESOURCE CENTER
The California Healthy Kids Resource Center (CHKRC) maintains a comprehensive collection of health education materials for use by teachers, administrators, university faculty, LEA staff and other professionals who work with preschool through 12th grade students in school settings and after-school programs.
The California Healthy Kids Resource Center is funded by the California Department of Education School Health Connections, Healthy Kids Program, Nutrition Education and Training Unit; and the California Department of Public Health, "Network for a Healthy California". The California Healthy Kids Resource Center was created to encourage schools throughout California to establish stimulating and effective health education programs and to provide accurate and sound information about health issues.
The Purpose of the Center The California Healthy Kids Resource Center was established to assist schools in promoting health literacy. Health literacy is the capacity of an individual to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services and the competence to use such information and services in ways that are health enhancing.
Health-literate students should develop a growing mastery of knowledge, skills, and behaviors in four key areas:
♦ Acceptance of personal responsibility for lifelong health
♦ Respect for and promotion of the health of others
♦ An understanding of the process of growth and development
♦ Informed use of health-related information, products, and services
The California Healthy Kids Resource Center assists schools in their effort to promote health literacy by loaning specific instructional resources for use either in the classroom or staff development sessions.
